Sports medicine incorporates scientific and medical principles in the study and treatment of sports-related injuries and illnesses. This will include the training and preparation for sports activities.
Prolotherapy
Prolotherapy is an older technique that has been modified more recently. It uses various concentrations of dextrose in injections to joints, tendons or ligaments to help initiate a healing response. It is a different agent than PRP but works in a similar fashion by recruiting chemicals within the body that are part of the healing mechanism the body uses. It is very safe and may be repeated as needed to achieve optimal results
Diagnostic Ultrasound
Use of high-frequency sound waves to image tissue within the body such muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and joints as an adjunct to physical examination in order to establish a diagnosis or to guide interventions such as injections. The images that are produced are high resolution and are comparable or superior to other imaging modalities at a much lower cost.
Trigger Point Injections
Trigger point injections are used to treat painful areas within a muscle. Unlike normal muscle tissue which is soft and supple, trigger points are stiff and fibrotic and are either nodular or band-like. They are painful to direct pressure and may be active even when the muscle is not being used. Trigger points are often present in very classical locations. They can also cause pain to radiate in patterns that are characteristic to each trigger point. Trigger point injections can reduce or eliminate these painful areas within muscles.
Viscosupplementation Injection
Viscosupplementation is an intervention used to treat arthritic joints, especially of the knee. Hyaluronic Acid is injected into the affected joint during this procedure. It is present in normal, healthy joints. As a joint becomes arthritic it produces less and lower quality hyaluronic acid within cartilage and joint fluid. Injecting hyaluronic acid into a joint can supplement and upgrade arthritic joint fluid. It is a safe intervention that is often very effective for months.
Medical Acupuncture
Medical acupuncture is performed by a physician trained and licensed in western medicine and who has additional specialized training in acupuncture. These physicians can be board certified as a means of validating their competency in the field of acupuncture. They may use acupuncture by itself or in combination with western techniques in the treatment of medical conditions.
Biomechanical Analysis
Biomechanical Analysis is the study of body movements as they pertain to a given activity. It can be used to augment understanding of an injury or as an aid in preventing injury and improving performance. It is applicable to any activity as well as athletic performance.
